The Department of Periodontology and Clinical Implantology of Royal Dental College is a state-of-the-art department with its clinical and research outlook extending beyond the normal UG and PG teaching curriculum of Periodontology, focusing on Interdisciplinary and Comprehensive Periodontal Practice that aims to retain and utilize natural teeth in the oral cavity for as long a period as possible.
Undergraduate training is realized through several nonclinical and preclinical projects acquainting students with all periodontal structures and holding discussion classes for small batches, familiarizing them with case recording and diagnosing of conditions of the periodontal tissues ranging from the normal to advanced periodontal disease.
The clinical students are encouraged to perform maximum number of oral prophylaxis cases including supragingival scaling and polishing with detailed case recording and treatment. Students are also trained to do special cases of root planning and curettage and are given an opportunity to assist in at least 10 cases of periodontal surgeries towards the end of their final year clinical posting.
Compulsory internship program for the UG students includes OP check ups, performing maximum number of ultrasonic scaling cases, assistance in all advanced surgical cases including regenerative surgeries and reconstructive plastic surgical procedures. Outstanding students are trained to do these procedures on their own.
The advanced treatment procedures normally performed in the department include pocket elimination surgeries, resective and regenerative surgeries, plastic surgeries, Laser assisted periodontal surgery (AMD Picasso Laser Unit) and implant (Noble Biocare Unit) placements.
The Department has fulfilled all requirements for its postgraduate inspection without any compliance in its first attempt and was commented upon by the inspectors as a well run and well maintained department. Apart from fulfilling all basic requirements of DCI to start the postgraduate programme, the department is well equipped with modern materials and equipment, a good collection of back volumes of international journals and textbooks by foreign and Indian authors, and a good input of patients demanding advanced periodontal treatment. It also provides a tie up with basic and allied science departments of various institutions for interdisciplinary case management and research possibilities.
The post graduate curriculum of the department is based on a unique syllabus formulated on the guidelines of Kerala University of Health Sciences, Kerala, aimed at molding every PG student into a competent researcher and a postgraduate teacher of tomorrow. Every student joining the department will be welcomed with a postgraduate student hand book which constitutes the data of all requirements at the joining of the course, 3 year work and study details, examination and evaluation procedures and academic calendar.
